We’re marking National Lighthouse Day this August 7th with a look back at one of our most memorable projects, the Benbecula Distillery Lighthouse.
Lighthouses have long been a symbol of safety, security and protection. Sending out a light to weary sailors and tired ships to warn of danger and prevent them running ashore, their warm glows also provide a timely message that no sea is too stormy to traverse.
A Modern Icon in the Outer Hebrides
Our favourite lighthouse, though, is a little more modern - and serves quite a different purpose. Found on the Outer Hebrides, the Benbecula Distillery’s lighthouse is home to one of Scotland’s newest Scotch whiskies.
Working alongside sustainable distillery specialists and lead architects Organic Architects, Gray & Dick was tasked with creating the glass lighthouse structure that would house the distillery’s pot sill. The frame was built from G&D’s base in Clydebank to exacting specifications to provide a perfect fit for the glass panels. The deconstructed frame was then transported over 250 miles to Uist on the Isle of Benbecula, before being reassembled using a Raico glass carrier system.
All glass panels were installed at 26 degrees, transforming the flat panels into the cylindrical shape associated with traditional lighthouses, allowing the shape to reflect light at different angles based on the lighting arrangement and create a spectacular geometric shape.
A Beacon for the Future of Scottish Spirits
The landmark lighthouse and its structure was created and designed as a nod to the island’s rich maritime history, as well as a beacon of things to come in the future. The Scottish spirits industry and whisky tourism continues to grow from strength to strength, with the Benecula Distillery lighting up the way.
