Back On Track: Restoration of the Historic Troon Station
In May 1892, the Glasgow and South Western Railway company opened Troon Station to give the people of the South Ayrshire town a new and more convenient passenger station.
With now historic buildings designed by the celebrated architect James Miller, Troon Station became a cornerstone of the town and over the ensuing 130 years contributed to its prosperity. Since 1923 Troon Station has served as the gateway to nine Open Championships held at the nearby Royal Troon Golf Club, with the tenth Royal Troon hosted tournament scheduled for July 2024.
In July 2021, Troon Station suffered extensive damage when it was engulfed by a devastating fire. The platform 1 station building was destroyed and the pyramid shaped canopy – created by Gray & Dick 25 years previous – was also damaged. Gray & Dick has been appointed to the restoration team with work already underway to complete the project prior to the 2024 Open.
Topping It Off
The design of the new station has been informed by Troon residents. The new station will retain its former footprint and aesthetic, but be transformed into a modern, fit-for-purpose space intended to enhance the passenger experience.
Gray & Dick has been commissioned to reinstate the pyramid shaped canopy over platform one. The new canopy design incorporates seven pyramid-shaped canopies which will be formed by a polycarbonate roof-lighting system, representing a modern equivalent of the original design. The new canopies will be created in our Glasgow-based workshop
Polycarbonate sheet material has been selected for its intrinsic qualities, and will be installed within the steelwork frames:
Durability – polycarbonate is half the weight of glass yet is virtually unbreakable, its impact resistance is 250 times that of glass.
Safety – Georgian wire polycarbonate has high temperature stability with no loss of property from -40°C to 130°C and a Class 1Y fire rating.
Design – clear Georgian wire polycarbonate has optical transparency with high light transmission.
At Gray and Dick, we offer bespoke steelwork fabrication from our workshop and can serve the whole of Scotland and beyond. In fact, this is not the first time our workshop has serviced the rail industry. In 2021 we fabricated a bolted structural glazed system for new, high-value retail units in the £8 million redevelopment of Aberdeen Railway Station.
