Gray & Dick is proud to share that Port Ellen Distillery has been featured in TIME Magazine’s World’s Greatest Places 2025

The iconic whisky distillery had stood dormant for over 40 years since its closure in 1983, but its reputation as a maker of coveted spirits only grew in its absence. Its hotly-anticipated reopening in 2024 was welcomed by whisky connoisseurs worldwide. But beyond its distilling capabilities, Port Ellen Distillery also solidified its status as a landmark on the Scottish Isle of Islay thanks to its boundary-redefining architecture as designed and installed by Gray & Dick’s architectural glazing specialists.

World-class design

TIME Magazine’s World’s Greatest Places 2025 has recognised the work and dedication of the minds behind this behemoth of a project to restore and revitalise the island’s iconic whisky distillery.

This commendation pays particular attention to the custom-built stillhouses constructed from 17.5mm floor-to-ceiling laminated glass to provide unobstructed views of the Hebridean coastline.

Also incorporated into this world-class design is the island’s first Sky-Frame doorway, which welcomes visitors to Port Ellen’s Bay Room with an unbounded spatial experience supported by a bespoke framing system designed by Gray & Dick.

Gray & Dick’s expertise in glazing architecture lends this historic site a modern and innovative look, bringing the distillery into the 21st century while honouring the legacy and heritage that have made the Port Ellen Distillery a luxury destination for purveyors of fine malt whiskies worldwide.
