The lost jewel in the crown of Islay, Port Ellen Distillery, reopened its doors last month after more than 40 years of closure.

In a historic moment for Islay, Scotch, and the world of whisky, the legendary “ghost” distillery has been re-envisioned as part of Diageo’s £185 million investment to breathe life into a number of closed distilleries across Scotland.

The New Era of Port Ellen

Drawing on Port Ellen’s extraordinary history and heritage, this iconic distillery has been designed to push the boundaries of innovation, experimentation, and sustainability. While Port Ellen Distillery will still produce its sought-after single malt, it will now also offer exclusive experiences for guests to immerse themselves in Scotch history surrounded by outstanding architecture.

Making a Mark on Islay

In collaboration with Diageo, Michael Laird Architects led the project to sensitively restore Port Ellen, retaining important historical features whilst enhancing contemporary spaces. At the heart of the reimagined distillery sits the striking still house, home to two pairs of copper stills. Carefully designed and installed by Gray & Dick, the glass ouses create an impactful presence on the Scottish landscape and a lasting impression on those visiting Islay.

With 17.5mm toughened laminated glass sourced from within the United Glass Group, Gray & Dick crafted the still house to flow with the modern interpretation of the repetitive arrangement of the roof profile. The striking distillery now seamlessly blends ultra-modern design with unobstructed views through the glass still house to the stunning coastline of Islay.

Framing the Scottish Landscape

Complimenting the magnificent new still house, Gray & Dick were delighted to contribute to other critical elements of the distillery's regeneration.

As exclusive supplier partners in Scotland, Gray & Dick were proud to bring Sky-Frame to Port Ellen. Known for its seamless transition between interior and exterior spaces, the Sky-Frame window in the Bay Room provides an unbounded spatial experience with picturesque views over Kilnaughton Bay. The spectacular Sky-Frame doorway is the first of its kind on the island of Islay, complimented by a bespoke supporting frame system designed by Gray & Dick.
