Since 1923, Troon Station has welcomed golf enthusiasts to South Ayrshire for the Open Championship. Set to host its 10th Open this July, all eyes will be on Troon this summer and the soon-completed restoration of Troon Station.
Following a devastating fire in July 2021, reducing part of the historic train station building to ashes and causing a partial collapse, work has been underway to reconstruct the platform one building.
History at the Heart of Design
The local community of Troon played a pivotal role in the design of the new station building. In keeping with the Victorian architecture found throughout Troon, in particular at Royal Troon Golf Club, the new design utilises the existing footprint and building’s aesthetic to maintain the character and charm of the station.
The £5 million project saw the reinstatement of the platform one building in a way that was sympathetic to the history of the station, while remaining in line with the building on platform two. Designed to modern standards, the new Troon Station will feature improved facilities to enhance the passenger experience, which will be very much welcomed by everyone travelling to The Open.
Bringing Life to Troon Station
Gray & Dick were proud to play a key role in the restoration of Troon Station. With work beginning in summer 2023, the reinstallation of the iconic canopies was the first step in the station's journey. Created by Gray & Dick over 25 years prior, we were once again commissioned to reinstate the traditional canopy design. Carrying out all the design and fabrication work at Gray & Dick’s Glasgow workshop, the new canopies incorporated seven pyramid-shaped canopies infilled with polycarbonate sheets. Glazed with Georgian wired effect polycarbonate to provide a modern equivalent to the original design, each canopy weighed around 2 metric tonnes when completed. The canopies were delivered to site in section, before being assembled, glazed and craned into position over a number of weeks late last summer.
With the canopies in place, work got underway on the main station rebuild in October 2023. With the reopening of platform one set for this summer, we’re looking forward to seeing Troon Station alive with activity once more.

Connecting Scotland’s Rich Golfing Heritage
Gray & Dick have been integral to a number of rail transport and golf projects across Scotland, most recently working on the award-winning design of the new headquarters for St Andrews Links Trust. Proud to play a part in Scotland's golfing heritage, Gray and Dick designed both structural glass and metalwork to preserve panoramic views of the East Lothian coastline at Gullane Golf Course.
Working in areas of conservation is nothing new to Gray & Dick, having carried out work on the listed building areas of Aberdeen railway station.
Understanding the importance of a location's rich heritage, we welcome work across Scotland and beyond and look forward to contributing to the country’s architectural history.
